TCF Task 2 Follow-Ups: Build the Next Question From the Answer You Heard

A follow-up does not need a longer sentence. Select one detail the other person actually gave and clarify what still matters for your role and purpose. When the information is complete, move to another relevant point. The methods, French examples and exercises are original HootBill practice materials. They are not official exam materials.

Find information rather than a magic question count

FEI describes Task 2 as obtaining information in an everyday situation, with both roles stated in the prompt. Your questions should serve the enquiry you are making.

This guide sets no required question count. Several prepared questions in a row are not automatically mechanical. Check whether they fit, whether their answers are already known and whether you are ignoring a useful new clue.

Platform practice method

Look for a real gap inside the answer

Sort a useful detail into time, place, cost, conditions or options. Choose the point that matters now and decide whether you still need an exact time, an included item or an exception.

“Saturday morning, a small group, 25 dollars” is a hypothetical practice answer, not HootBill pricing. It could support questions about the start time, participant count or materials. Skip anything the other person has already explained.

Original practice example

Original questions for a weekend-class enquiry

These options address different gaps. Select a question that follows the actual answer instead of asking all four without listening.

Vous avez dit que le cours commence samedi matin. À quelle heure exactement ?
Make a broad time more precise.
Quand vous dites « petit groupe », il y a combien de participants en général ?
Clarify what a small group means in practice.
Les 25 dollars comprennent-ils le matériel, ou faut-il le payer séparément ?
Ask what the price covers without inventing a discount or condition.
Et si je ne peux pas venir un samedi, est-ce qu’il est possible de changer de séance ?
Check an absence option when it is relevant to the enquiry.

Platform practice method

Separate prepared questions from listening-led ones

Prepare a few information keywords and ask a partner to change one condition. After each answer, identify what you still need to know, then form the next question. Later, omit that spoken explanation and ask naturally.

Mark each question as prepared or generated from the answer. These are observation labels, not official assessment categories or a required ratio. Look for repeated information, overloaded questions and missed relevant gaps.

In HootBill Task 2 interaction practice, focus on following up after a condition. Review the feedback, then change the enquiry scenario and produce a fresh question independently. AI feedback supports practice; it is not an official assessment.

  • Do not force a follow-up after every sentence.
  • Do not replace the enquiry with unrelated small talk.
  • Transfer the information-gathering method, not a fixed question list.

Before you start

Must I keep following up when the answer is short?

No. Follow up when a useful information gap remains. Otherwise move to another relevant point.

Do follow-ups need complex grammar?

Aim first for a clear, relevant question you can control. Complexity is useful only when it serves what you need to say.
