TCF Speaking Templates: Reuse Building Blocks, Not a Memorised Speech

You can reuse a structure, but a full memorised speech is fragile preparation. FEI’s published oral criteria cover language, interaction, discourse organisation, coherence and thematic development. A safer practice method is to prepare small speaking functions that can be recombined. Original HootBill practice, not official exam material or an official scoring template.

Platform practice method

Turn a template into speaking functions

Prepare four jobs: answer directly, add one concrete detail or reason, turn something you just heard into a follow-up, and illustrate a viewpoint with a specific situation. For Task 1 practise answer + detail; for Task 2 listen before choosing the next question; for Task 3 combine position + reason + example or limitation.

Official material does not supply one universal speech to reproduce across topics. These four functions are a HootBill training method, not a scoring formula.

Original French examples: reuse the function, change the facts

These are original HootBill exercises, not official questions, answer keys or scoring samples.

En ce moment, je travaille dans le commerce. Ce qui me plaît surtout, c’est le contact avec les clients.
Task 1: answer first, then add one concrete detail.
Vous avez dit que le cours commence à dix-huit heures. Est-ce qu’il y a aussi un cours le week-end ?
Task 2: use a detail you just heard to build the next question.
Je suis plutôt favorable à cette idée, parce qu’elle peut faire gagner du temps. Par exemple, une famille peut éviter un long déplacement.
Task 3: give a position, reason and concrete situation.

Platform practice method

Drill: keep the function and force the content to change

Choose three unrelated prompts and allow only four keywords for each. In round two, change at least two facts such as person, time, place or reason. In round three, have a partner interrupt with a new question and answer that first. Check that you answer the current question, add new information and do not force a prepared line into the wrong situation.

Before you start

Does using a structure in TCF speaking automatically lose points?

We did not verify such an official rule. Structure can organise speech; the problem is depending on a fixed answer that cannot adapt to interaction, role or topic changes.

Can I memorise connectors and useful sentence patterns?

Yes, as language tools you genuinely understand. Keep changing the topic, order and details so the pattern supports communication rather than a fixed paragraph.
