TCF Task 3 Examples: Make the Example Support Your Reason

An example helps when the listener can see how it supports your reason. Explain why first, illustrate it, then reconnect it to the question. A hypothetical scene can clarify a point; it does not establish that everyone will get the same result. The methods, French examples and exercises are original HootBill practice materials. They are not official exam materials.

Develop the opinion without leaving it behind

FEI describes Task 3 as expressing a point of view. This exercise keeps the reason, illustration and conclusion connected to that point rather than inserting a familiar story regardless of the question.

The remote-work topic below is an original practice scenario, not a quotation from an official sample. A position can be conditional, and an example can be hypothetical. Make that status clear instead of presenting an invented event as your own experience.

Platform practice method

Explain the mechanism before selecting the story

State a reason, then ask why it would hold. Explain the intermediate step. After saying remote work saves commuting, explain what a person could actually do with the time recovered.

Choose a person, action and outcome. Then return to the reason: is the benefit the location itself or the time genuinely saved? If your story could fit any topic but you cannot explain its connection to this reason, choose a more relevant example.

Original practice example

Original example: develop the commuting point

These four lines illustrate a qualified position, explanation, hypothetical scene and return to the reason. They are not a complete model answer or a required four-sentence structure.

À mon avis, le télétravail peut être utile quand il réduit les déplacements inutiles.
State a qualified position.
Quand une personne passe moins de temps dans les transports, elle peut récupérer du temps pour sa famille ou pour se reposer.
Explain the link between less commuting and daily life.
Par exemple, quelqu’un qui économise une heure de trajet peut utiliser ce temps pour aller chercher son enfant ou préparer le repas plus tôt.
Use a hypothetical person and a concrete action.
Dans ce cas, le bénéfice ne vient pas seulement du fait de rester chez soi, mais du temps réellement récupéré.
Return to what this example actually supports rather than praising remote work in general.

Platform practice method

Remove the story to check your reasoning

First state only your position and reason. Is the explanation already understandable? Next add a short example and one sentence connecting it back. Finally change a condition: would the same reason apply equally to someone who already lives near the office?

Transfer the method to libraries, public transport or study habits. Do not repeatedly substitute nouns in one family story; make the new example explain the new reason.

In HootBill Task 3 practice, focus on whether the example supports the reason, use feedback to clarify one link and retry with a different question. One assisted attempt does not establish mastery. AI guidance is not an official TCF score.

  • Explain why instead of repeating that something is important.
  • Do not turn one example into a universal outcome.
  • Return to the question after the illustration.

Before you start

Does every reason need an example?

No fixed formula is proposed here. An example can make an abstract reason concrete; do not add a repetitive story when the explanation is already clear.

What if I have no personal experience of the topic?

Use a clearly hypothetical person or everyday situation, such as “quelqu’un qui…”. Do not present an invented event as something you personally experienced.
